Registration Permission / Overrides

Overview

If a student receives an error while attempting to register for a course, instructors can enter a registration override in UIndy Self-Service. This allows the student to register successfully once the appropriate approval has been granted.

Overrides should only be used when the appropriate approval has already been obtained from the department chair, dean, or other relevant authority when required.

See Common Override Codes below

Common Override Codes

Override CodeWhen to Use
AttributeStudent does not have the required attribute assigned
ClassStudent does not meet the required class level (Freshman, Sophomore, etc.)
CorequisiteStudent needs to take a course without the required co-requisite
DuplicateStudent needs to register for the same course number more than once (e.g., Special Topics)
Field of StudyStudent does not meet a major/minor/concentration restriction
Honors CollegeStudent registering for an Honors course
LevelStudent registering outside their program level (e.g., undergraduate vs graduate)
Dept/InstructCourse requires instructor or departmental permission
PrerequisiteStudent has not completed the prerequisite but approval was granted
RepeatStudent repeating a course they previously completed
TimeCourse overlaps with another course (requires approval from both instructors)

When should an override be used?

Overrides are typically used when a student cannot register due to:

  • prerequisite restrictions
  • class standing restrictions
  • repeat restrictions
  • special approval courses (e.g., private lessons or ensembles)

How do I know which override code to use?

  • If you already know a student has received special approval, select the override code that corresponds to that approval.
  • If you do not know in advance, ask the student to share the registration error message they received when attempting to register. Use the override code that removes that specific restriction.

Tip: Registration error messages typically indicate the restriction (for example, prerequisite, class level, or field of study), which helps determine the appropriate override code.

Can instructors override course capacity?

No. Capacity overrides must be processed manually by the Registrar’s Office or an academic advisor after instructor approval.
